The other day Levi discovered it is really fun to stomp on the metal plates that cover up water mains on sidewalks. Who knew how fun those could be? I normally walk by them without even noticing they are there. Don't you?
But Levi noticed them. They made him laugh. He thinks they're funny when they clank loudly or wobble under his little feet. I’ll say, “Let's go back and stomp on them again.” And he does.
I realized I was only able to experience this joy because I decided to stop carrying Levi and let him walk on his own. Sometimes we have to give up on how we see things so we can experience how someone else interacts with the world. When I carry Levi and walk my way, I miss out on his joyous discoveries. Sure our walk home may take longer or go in directions I never would have taken us… but I think it’s actually better that way. Don’t you?
